About

Holy Trinity is Żmigród's oldest surviving church, built on the site of an earlier one and funded by Adam von Schaffgotsch. Sources differ on the dates: most give 1595–1601, others say construction lasted from 1597 to 1607. A Renaissance portal with the coats of arms of the founder and his wife Katharina survives above the entrance. When the tower began to lean, it was propped up with buttresses that are still visible today.

After a fire in 1702, the interior was remodelled in Baroque style to designs by the Wrocław builder Christoph Hackner. In 1869–1870 a Neo-Gothic chancel was added with a large triptych altarpiece of the Holy Trinity. Today it is a three-aisled basilica with a barrel vault over the nave and net vaults over the aisles; look out for the epitaphs and the impressive organ case.

The church is on ul. Kościelna, close to the market square and the Hatzfeldt palace park, so it fits nicely into a walk around town. The interior is usually open during services.
