Museum of Fishing Traditions of the Milicz Ponds
Ruda Sułowska
A free museum of pond fishing at CET Naturum: 106 historic fishing tools and the story of the Stawy Milickie fish farm.
About
The Museum of Fishing Traditions of the Milicz Ponds and the Barycz Valley is part of the Naturum education and visitor centre in Ruda Sułowska, at the heart of one of Europe's largest complexes of fish-farming ponds. The idea of a museum dates back to the 1970s; the exhibition opened in 2015.
There are two displays. “Skansen” presents 106 objects – mainly tools and equipment used in pond farming – on loan from the Ethnographic Museum, a branch of the National Museum in Wrocław. “Dom Rybaka” (Fisherman's House) shows the Stawy Milickie company's own collection and tells the story of the local fish farm, home of the famous Milicz carp.
Admission is free. The museum is mainly open in the season (spring to autumn); sources give different hours, most often around 10:00–18:00, and off-season visits may be possible by prior arrangement – it's worth calling ahead. On site you'll also find a sensory trail, a small animal farm, a playground, a fishery and the Gospoda 8 Ryb restaurant, and horse-drawn photo safaris across the ponds start from here.
