Church of St Michael the Archangel, Milicz
Milicz
A Neoclassical parish church built in 1817–1821, with a Palladio-inspired façade, on ul. Kościelna in Milicz.
About
The parish church of St Michael the Archangel stands on ul. Kościelna in the northern part of Milicz. The present brick church was built in 1817–1821 in the Neoclassical style on a cruciform plan. Its most striking feature is the unusual façade, modelled on the designs of Andrea Palladio, topped by a hipped roof. The church is a listed monument.
Inside there is a single nave with galleries along the walls and three altars, and a crypt lies beneath the church. According to published descriptions, the most precious piece is a Renaissance baptismal font from 1561 – older than the building itself – and the organ loft holds a 19th-century instrument. Next to the church you'll also see a free-standing bell frame.
It makes a good stop on a walk around Milicz: the market square is close by, as is the former Church of Grace (today St Andrew Bobola). The interior is usually open during services; the exterior can be seen at any time.
