Church of the Assumption, Cieszków
Cieszków
“The pearl of Silesian late Baroque” – a former manor church completed around 1753, founded by Princess Katarzyna Sapieha.
About
The Church of the Assumption on ul. Waryńskiego is often called “the pearl of Silesian late Baroque”. The present building was completed around 1753, funded by Princess Katarzyna Agnieszka Ludwika Sapieha, owner of the Cieszków estate. It originally served as a manor church; today it is the parish church and a listed monument.
The building is remarkably elegant: a single domed nave, two west towers and a semicircular chancel flanked by chapels. Most of the furnishings date from the mid-18th century – Baroque-Rococo altars, a Rococo pulpit and confessional. The Sapieha coat of arms appears in several places, and the church holds a Rococo epitaph of the foundress; guidebooks say the church became her mausoleum after her death. See how many references to the princess you can find.
The church is close to Cieszków's market square and the former manor park with its ponds. The interior is usually open during services; the exterior can be seen at any time.
