About

The Church of St Matthias the Apostle in Trzebicko is one of the most remarkable wooden churches in Lower Silesia. Its construction is dated to 1672 – traditionally on the basis of an inscription above the side entrance – and an older church stood here before. It sits on a small hill, reached through a gate shaded by old oaks, and was entered in the heritage register on 23 February 1959.

The church is built of horizontal logs, with a single nave and a square tower, and is entirely covered with wooden shingles. Low covered arcades known as “soboty” run around the walls; worshippers from distant villages once waited here before services. Inside, look out for the Mannerist pulpit, the main altar of 1678 with a painting of the Holy Family, and the heraldic epitaph of Melchior and Ursula von Gafron. Legend links the church's origins to a stop by St Adalbert on his way to Prussia.

The interior is usually open during services; guidebooks say visits outside Mass can be arranged with the parish by phone. The exterior and arcades can be seen at any time.
