Sułów Watermill
Sułów
A former watermill on the Młynówka Sułowska millrace – by the bridge where many Barycz kayak trips end.
About
The former watermill at ul. Kolejowa 22 in Sułów stands on the Młynówka Sułowska – a millrace that branches off the Barycz at the Sułów weir, skirts the village to the south and still feeds the Milicz Ponds complexes today (Ruda Sułowska, Niezgoda, Radziądz). Many kayak trips on the Barycz end at the bridge next to the mill.
We do not know when the mill was built, but the Sułów chronicle mentions it as early as the 17th century: in 1643 the Swedes, collecting war levies, “roughed up the miller's wife”, and in 1652 the then lord of Sułów founded a hospital “between the mill and the Barycz”. Before the First World War Sułów had two mills employing 25–40 people every day; after the war, once the new border had been drawn, only one remained, working two or three days a week.
The mill was later converted from water to electric power. The building is listed in the municipal register of historic monuments as a “mill complex” (the mill and an outbuilding). Fragments of the milling machinery and the miller's cupboard survive in the attic; the building is privately owned – please view it from the street and the bridge.
A few hundred metres away, between the Barycz riverbed and the millrace, stood a medieval castle (mentioned in 1351), burned by the Hussites in 1432 – its site is marked by a stone marker.
