About

The Church of St Charles Borromeo in Radziądz was built in 1727–1735, funded by the Hatzfeldt family, lords of the Żmigród estate, for a newly founded Catholic parish. Construction was led by the Wrocław builder Christoph Hackner, and the design is attributed to Christoph Tausch. The church stands in the centre of the village on the road from Żmigród to Milicz, surrounded by a disused churchyard with pre-war gravestones.

From the outside it is a modest single-nave building with a tower set into the façade and framed by scrolls. The real surprise is inside: the rectangular nave is shaped as an oval with interlocking ellipses – a refined example of late Baroque design. The main altar holds a painting of the patron saint, and the organ stands in the gallery above the entrance.

Radziądz lies on the edge of the Barycz Valley fish ponds, so a visit combines well with birdwatching. The interior is usually open during services; the exterior can be seen at any time.
